December European mood brightened yet again
An European Union Survey has shown that European business and consumer confidence has improved for the ninth month in a row, with a particular increase in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The European Commissions economic sentiment indicator for the euro zone increased to 91.3 points in December, up 2.5 points from November. The index had previously hit a record low of 64.6 points in the month of March 2009.
For the European Union as a whole, economic confidence increased by 4.1 points from November to 92 points. The improvement in both the euro zone and the wider European Union was mainly due to the higher confidence in industry. Also, there has been an increase in the European Commissions separate business climate indicator also improved in December ion the euro zone for the ninth consecutive month, standing at minus 1.22 points up from 1.53 points in November.
Separate figures from the European Union data agency Eurostat showed that euro zone retail sales fell in November, as consumers tightened their belts ahead of the pre-determined Christmas rush.
The volume of retail sales in the euro zone fell by 1.2% compared with October and by 4% from the previous year.
